The story of Lot, the nephew of father Abraham is a really interesting one. So Lot was picked up by Abraham during the transition to the unknown destination-(the land where I would give you as promised by God to Abraham). Like a good protégée he followed and learnt, he got so blessed he even acquired a lot of livestock and herdsmen. At some point when the land could not accommodate them together with Abrahams herdsmen, they decided to go separate ways. Abraham asked Lot to choose a path.

In making a choice, Lot leaned on his understanding, he used the weather forecast, he employed the help of the economic predictions, he chose the seemingly robust looking ground and settled there. The Bible then describes the inhabitants of the land as wicked and sinful against the Lord.

But how was Lot able to raise virgin daughters in such a corrupt environment. It looks like Lot and his wife did a good job raising virgins. They must have homeschooled the girls, kept them from meeting with boys and going out for parties, maybe they even had devotions with them. They restricted their movements but they couldn’t stop their ears from hearing, they couldn’t stop their eyes from seeing, lewdness was all over the news, they couldn’t stop their hearts from conceiving evil. They had raised Sodomites!

When judgement came on Sodom and Lots family was to be rescued, Lot and two of his girls made it out of Sodom alive. Even though they left Sodom, Sodom did not leave them. Both girls raped their dad and got pregnant by him. How did virgin girls turn to rapist?

Lessons from Mr. & Mrs. Lot

Make prayer a priority, seeking God's face over all issues of life. When Lot was asked to make a choice on where to settle, he didn’t ask God’s opinion. He just chose by sight. The Lord says call to me and I will show you great and mighty things which you do not know-Jer. 33:3.He (God) is the custodian of secret things we don't know, when we seek with all our heart we will find answers. Lot had lost touch with God so much so he didn’t know destruction was ahead but God revealed this to Abraham that lived in a different city. Lot would have been consumed but for Abrahams intercession.

Teach the children to trust God, Help them to have personal encounters with God. If they have a need especially when it is not pressing, don’t be too quick to play super hero in their lives. Ask them to pray about it , ask them to trust God for it.

Bring them along the faith walk with you, if you are going through a phase in life and the children are old enough to understand, let them journey with you on how you wait , pray and trust God on that particular issue. They will be able to testify of God's faithfulness and how sweet it is to wait and trust Him. Tell you what, Lot did not even recognize deliverance after Abraham delivered him and his household from their kidnappers so how could he teach lessons learnt to his children. Teach the children to come out from among them and be separate. Help them to know their identity in Christ. We live in the world but we don’t have to be of the world, we don't have to dance to the drums of it's temptations and lack of standards. We don’t have to do what the world does even if it is popular.

Teach them Integrity. There is always a choice, a God choice. We are never left without a choice. There should be no excuse for sin. Even when no one is watching, we make the best and the right choice because like Joseph we would never do any abominable thing against our God.

Pay for Value. If you have to relocate to a better neighborhood and you can afford it, do so. If you have to enroll the children in Christian schools and you can afford it, then go for it. If you need to homeschool, do so diligently. The rewards surpass the investments. They are worth it!
